“I drew the monster from Big Lin and Little Lin on my reading card, and I wrote my favorite sentence: ‘Money isn’t everything. Having money doesn’t mean having life, health, or happiness. We shouldn’t always rely on others to get what we want. We should study hard and use our own abilities to create our own world.’” Pan Miya, a student from Class 1, Grade 3, excitedly shared her reading insights with her classmates while holding her carefully made reading card. Recently, the two-month reading activity titled “Books Accompany Growth, Reading Nourishes Childhood” in Class 1, Grade 3 of PYP successfully concluded. The colorful and content-rich reading cards became the most precious gains and witnesses of the children’s reading journey.

To cultivate good reading habits, broaden knowledge, and enhance language skills, we officially launched this reading activity in early October. During the preparation phase, teachers carefully selected a series of classic children’s books such as The Scarecrow, Grimm’s Fairy Tales, The Insect World, and The Secret of the Magic Gourd, tailored to the cognitive characteristics and reading abilities of third-grade students. This provided the children with a high-quality reading list. At the same time, the activity emphasized “making reading cards” as a core component, encouraging students to use words, drawings, collages, and other forms to record good phrases, exciting passages, reading questions, and personal reflections. This made the reading cards an important bridge connecting reading with thinking, and input with output.

During the activity, a strong reading atmosphere filled the classroom. In Chinese language classes, teachers organized “Reading Sharing” sessions, where students showcased their reading cards and exchanged reading experiences in groups. Some students copied touching passages with their simple handwriting, others creatively designed their cards into the shapes of characters from the books, and some even drew story mind maps to clearly outline the plot. The teachers couldn’t help but remark, “The reading cards help children dive deeper than just skimming. They actively filter information, organize their thoughts, and express their ideas. This process makes reading deeper and more meaningful.”

During break times, children could be seen engrossed in reading in the school library, under the shade of trees on campus, or at their desks at home. They sometimes made careful annotations, sometimes bent over to draw on their reading cards, and other times engaged in quiet discussions with classmates about the storylines. Parents also reported that their children had grown to love reading even more—they not only actively shared stories from books but also discussed their reflections using the reading cards with family members. Both their reading habits and expressive abilities showed noticeable improvement.

At the end of the activity, the class held an “Outstanding Reading Card Exhibition.” From the reading cards collected in the class, outstanding works with substantial content, innovative designs, and creativity were selected. These cards featured neat handwriting, rich illustrations, or profound reflections, collectively showcasing the children’s reading achievements and creativity. As students gathered around the display stand to admire the diverse reading cards, they learned from one another, further fueling their enthusiasm for reading.

Using reading cards as a medium, this activity not only helped children accumulate knowledge and broaden their knowledge horizons through reading but also fostered good reading habits and thinking skills. In the future, we will continue to organize diverse reading activities, allowing the fragrance of books to permeate every corner of the campus. Let reading become an important companion on the children’s growth journey, helping them thrive joyfully in the nourishment of books.
